I depend on these sales to be small</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">reaffirmations of the creative path I have been on all my adult life.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Much of what you receive when you buy an “original” is the inkjet copy of the previous iteration</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">of that panel with varying amounts of fresh work- either in paint or collage- superimposed on the</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">copy. I have always attempted to print in archival ink, but I have noticed that old panels are</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">sometimes faded. So, please try to be protective when displaying panels to ultraviolet light.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">I consider that the sale of a panel constitutes the final phase in the creation of the art. The</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">process is not complete until the work has found a safe home somewhere in the world. Until</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">then it is just another sheet of paper sitting in a stack in my studio.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Every new purchaser gets a town named after him/her. If you'd rather not have your family</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">name inscribed on the Map or would rather I used another name please let me know. And, if you</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">don't live in the U.S., please send me your address so that I can notify you when your name has</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">been used. Stone is currently number two on the wait-list of names.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">It's my dream that one day, probably long after I am dead, that these panels will get</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">reassembled to create a giant Map in some museum or other large public venue. I told one</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">museum director of this fantasy, and he told me that it would never happen, that museums</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">already had too difficult a time borrowing each other's works. But....who knows? Maybe a new</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">age of co-operation and goodwill will prevail, and there will be a great coming together!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">You can help preserve my work by buying more Map items and by encouraging your friends to</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">collect them, too. All proceeds from the sale of these things go back directly into the project and</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">will help pay for supplies and for the valuable work of my part-time assistant, Bret, who scans,</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">copies, and archives the work.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">A large section of the Map ( 1327 panels or 34% of the total) is being shown at DOX, the</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">contemporary art museum in Prague. The show opened June 4 and will run until November.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Another, even larger, exhibit is planned for the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City for the</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">summer of 2023.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Follow us, too, on Twitter and Instagram!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-10564807840007257342022-06-15T07:13:00.003-07:002022-06-15T07:13:39.941-07:00Installing the Map in Prague<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf3dSZk2gs6zU5D_bPcl6MyTYmCIVa4RTg3DDGVlb7-ptkWCOHr118IjUSjS4BC6EQflwn2_F1B2DSl18WWVikM6ktM3k7xD-jp8tD9_Sl_v7vrYqD2HYCzo3nr-CZYeu_-zig8t3h73AaEU5OUOd1DhlOvzj9QPnM5nr9rYQHmOZilg_WznS839E/s4032/IMG-2482.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="457" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf3dSZk2gs6zU5D_bPcl6MyTYmCIVa4RTg3DDGVlb7-ptkWCOHr118IjUSjS4BC6EQflwn2_F1B2DSl18WWVikM6ktM3k7xD-jp8tD9_Sl_v7vrYqD2HYCzo3nr-CZYeu_-zig8t3h73AaEU5OUOd1DhlOvzj9QPnM5nr9rYQHmOZilg_WznS839E/w343-h457/IMG-2482.jpg" width="343" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">That's Ladja up on the scaffold. interviews, etc, from over the last 12 or so years, but some
questions remain. I'm posting them here per your suggestion to make
them available for a wider audience. So I guess I'll just jump in...</span></span></span></p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.08in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<span style="color: #1a1a1b;"><span style="font-family: Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">New
panels are each given a "center" around which the artistic
operations are executed. How is the location of the center
determined?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.08in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<span style="color: #1a1a1b;"><span style="font-family: Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Many
panels, but not all, have heavy dashed (often circular) lines around
the center. And maybe around other points. And sometimes in
expanding(?) concentric patterns. Sometimes these lines or fields
overlap. I've seen you say that they don't really represent a
physical in-world element and that they're a graphic element to the
art. Basically, I'd like you to unpack how these forms work. When do
they appear and when don't they? When are there multiples? When do
they overlap? When are they true circles vs. "beans" or
other less regular forms? If they're something your cards refer to,
what are they called?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.08in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<br />
</p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.08in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<span style="color: #ff6600;"><span style="font-family: Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">The
dashed lines were originally just design elements. But then, in
response to questions from redditors, I added to the reanimated human
fantsay by saying that the dashes represnted invisble fences limiting
newly arrived reanimants to the immadiate area around that town.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.08in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<br />
</p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<span style="color: #1a1a1b;"><span style="font-family: Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Do
the first appearances of the void have the word "incursion"
printed on them or is that something else?</span></span></span></p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<br />
</p>
<p style="border: none; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 0.22in; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 2; padding: 0in; widows: 2;">
<span style="color: #1a1a1b;"><span style="font-family: Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">That
was the original term for The Void.</span></span></span></p>

A good example is shown in this image. The village of Kateville has been tipped slightly to the right or clockwise in response to a black card. (Red cards instruct me to tilt the axis to the left.)</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">I've had word of a possible European show this summer. The details aren't firm yet, but I will post them here as soon as they have been established. I'm thrilled to have the potential of another show after the long pandemic drought.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">I continue to sell on eBay and Etsy and invite you to take a look at the listings. There are currently over 100 on the two sites combined. As I say in the text for the listings, I see their sale and placement to be the final step in the creative process. Actually, in my fondest dreams, there may be an even further step: the re-combining of the original panels in a huge exhibit some time long after my demise. Who knows?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Thanks for your interest and continuing support!</span></p>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-39097117238259971632021-11-11T08:25:00.001-08:002021-11-11T08:25:32.904-08:00Where we are now....<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9bvBKT9Zcto-VuyIaYCc0KeSUmnFPjKz6oHjjZrXT9iF6Wz9OTNxbqoV6NEGnCpaw97LbEjLgCMTdORHKV2dClduCce7NNGao-3rdROvE6uCl2LmZDAcv3A3QELx8sDg64L9m_lmSko/s2048/C.VIII.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1638" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9bvBKT9Zcto-VuyIaYCc0KeSUmnFPjKz6oHjjZrXT9iF6Wz9OTNxbqoV6NEGnCpaw97LbEjLgCMTdORHKV2dClduCce7NNGao-3rdROvE6uCl2LmZDAcv3A3QELx8sDg64L9m_lmSko/s320/C.VIII.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">You probably know by now that Jerry's Map was born in a front office of the Hoover Ball Bearing Company on South State Road in Ann Arbor in August, 1963. By the time I put it away in 1983, never thinking that I would take it up again, it had grown to about 800 panels.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The total number of panels, at latest count, was 3792. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The sale of retired, archived original panels continues, and, to date, we have sold 860 of them. We continue, on Etsy and eBay, to find permanent homes for the remaining 1500 which are currently available for sale. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The newest change in technique in the execution of the Map is to cock the axes for the 1-inch collage layer. The instruction cards tell me how many degrees to tip the main axis either clockwise or counter. Watch for it to show up in the daily Twitter postings!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-58442045747975698552021-10-18T17:34:00.001-07:002021-10-18T17:34:37.157-07:00Update!<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS6nzSR9MsNnZfwU53ftuVuIa7EWis0vqqXQsNeyUEEw-weNiHa5X5PIK3uLaGP02IGlauHaQeSoTv7kW0WN-JHjZ_kkwPce7Otft_w_ycB4GrKdEtFdEguot0WJyW5ecJdO2Dcc6es24/s2000/s5w16.2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS6nzSR9MsNnZfwU53ftuVuIa7EWis0vqqXQsNeyUEEw-weNiHa5X5PIK3uLaGP02IGlauHaQeSoTv7kW0WN-JHjZ_kkwPce7Otft_w_ycB4GrKdEtFdEguot0WJyW5ecJdO2Dcc6es24/s320/s5w16.2.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Since I resumed selling on eBay and Etsy last December I have sold 615 original Map panels. I am thrilled! In a couple of weeks I will turn 79, and, while I am in pretty good health, I realize that I will be slowing down and that, one day, I will no longer be able to work on this project. Since I don't want my four kids to be saddled with disposing of the thousands of panels, I am anxious to do what I can to make sure that as many panels as possible will have found homes with poeple who care for them. My ultimate dream is that one day, long after I am gone, these thousands of panels will get reassembled in a monster show. So, stay tuned!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">And many thanks to those of you have become foster parents to my beloved Map!</span></p>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-78408217485183255772020-12-04T13:56:00.001-08:002020-12-04T13:56:25.292-08:00How I choose the panels for sale on eBay....<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLdg6dlbCj5_86TLZDK2-V8_v-kVMtR1bCKQme7xzPLyzcuRZYvRQ0nepRdIarqjqGfqwS2Anl9gmI-H7asvhkBSI97MHCLQjc_QnwBZoyioWzW6S39vURt_tgGRS__oyMbslidhUgJX8/s2048/n24e6.6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1583" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLdg6dlbCj5_86TLZDK2-V8_v-kVMtR1bCKQme7xzPLyzcuRZYvRQ0nepRdIarqjqGfqwS2Anl9gmI-H7asvhkBSI97MHCLQjc_QnwBZoyioWzW6S39vURt_tgGRS__oyMbslidhUgJX8/s320/n24e6.6.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-family: arial;">If you have been following the Map listings on eBay you may be wondering how we choose the panels to list there.</span><p></p><div><span style="font-family: arial;">You may already know that when changes are made to a panel they are made on an inkjet copy and not on the original. Each set of changes is referred to as a "generation" of that panel. "Generation" might also be called an iteration.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The retired panels are used to make up sets of the Map. Currently there are six sets, three of which are complete. The first set is the Studio Set, the one being actively worked on by me. The next set, Exhibition Set 1, or Ex 1, was the first complete set to be exhibited at MassMoCA in 2012. Ex 2 and Ex 3 are also complete and are being arcvhived. Ex 4 and 5 are incomplete and atre being added to as panels are retired.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">When a retired panel is not needed to help complete the last two sets it goes into a file of "Panels available for sale."</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">So....(we're getting there...) I use a set of cards (natch!) to go through the "sale" panels and select the ones to be offered. I choose two new panels to replace each one that is sold. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Got it?</span></div>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-86282168582202268622020-04-12T18:17:00.001-07:002020-04-12T18:17:37.125-07:00Jerry on Twitter and Instagram<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If you've been following me on Twitter or Instagram you know that I have been posting those 16-panel composite sheets. I started at the top of the Map and am working down in bands from left (West) to right (East). The goofy looking post above was from today and represents a floater, an outlier, at the far northeast corner of the Map. It dates back to a period when I was adding sheets that were not contiguous to existing sheets.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In further news: my wife has been making cloth face masks, and we have been distributing them to friends and relatives. If you would like one email me at biggouda@aol.com. They are free.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And, if you want to support that project as well as the Map, you can take a look at the items for sale on Etsy. Many have them have just been reduced by 20%!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitHh59ntVhf1Ahpm2YdOmuXCBAcfwfm6u-3GRDb_vBDzBbbTrdPEceq_xxS2_IW6R8jSrVVqP3oI_7AWCVmOSTyowxgB16Lw_BtLxmDAl7OJiDBqFbRy2Am_Ng-AQaH0vuS5VuColWBTI/s1600/tile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1237" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitHh59ntVhf1Ahpm2YdOmuXCBAcfwfm6u-3GRDb_vBDzBbbTrdPEceq_xxS2_IW6R8jSrVVqP3oI_7AWCVmOSTyowxgB16Lw_BtLxmDAl7OJiDBqFbRy2Am_Ng-AQaH0vuS5VuColWBTI/s320/tile.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">About fifteen years ago I started making these little one-quarter scale "tiles" of Map panels. Each one was two inches wide and two-and-a-half inches high. Over the years I made over 9000 of them! I placed them on ledges in cities where I was having a show. Or I placed them around the town where I lived. A few people found them and collected them. I sold sets of them on eBay. I gave them to friends and new acquaintances.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now I am about to put them back into circulation. And I am going to make a game of them. Here's how it will work: anyone finding two contiguous tiles will win a gift of an original Jerry's Map panel! Yay! I will give tiles away with all online purchases of Map items. I will hide tiles and tell you where to look for them. I will sell them. And I will send a couple, for free, to anyone who sends me an old-fashioned self addressed stamped envelope.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How does that sound? I'm looking to launch this game before the new year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Good luck!</span>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-36238390862895900522019-12-08T09:49:00.000-08:002019-12-09T04:50:24.998-08:00Jerry's museum donations<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPWgpAukMHV5GHCUJELBEteN0OvUm6Ecf6WVQhrV2hZ99-lrKUGfTtF0SD1b6pKfNO12XB2cGUKBLL2JD2OiFfYV0OD5xCcud5GQXdj9LAdc_HTV3GishE2cjLTcVee5Fcghz1hiCA3FY/s1600/blog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1237" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPWgpAukMHV5GHCUJELBEteN0OvUm6Ecf6WVQhrV2hZ99-lrKUGfTtF0SD1b6pKfNO12XB2cGUKBLL2JD2OiFfYV0OD5xCcud5GQXdj9LAdc_HTV3GishE2cjLTcVee5Fcghz1hiCA3FY/s320/blog.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For the past four or five years, since I started advancing into my seventies, I have been searching for safe homes for my monster art project. Never one to play by the prevailing rules, I started by sending groups of twenty contiguous panels (like the ones pictured above) to randomly selected museums throughout the world. The results were, at best,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">spotty. The majority of the institutions didn't even acknowledge receipt of the gift. A couple sent rejection letters but never returned the panels. A noble few of them returned the panels with a nice letter. One accepted the panels outright and thanked me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I had much better results with the museums with whom I had a prior relationship. Nine of them have now added my work to their permanent collections. I am grateful to them for providing a home for project!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My latest approach is to mail out groups of panels to museum directors along with a cover letter which tells them that the work is a personal gift to them and that they are free to dispose of it as they see fit or to return it to me. I ask only that they tell me what they have decided to do with the gift. We'll see.......</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the meantime I continue to offer panels, copies, postcards, and "instruction cards" on both Etsy and eBay. The sales from that helps defray the cost of materials and the aid of a part-time assistant. Many thanks to those who have helped!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are two new Jerry's Map shows coming up soon.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first to open will be at Intuit in Chicago. The opening is scheduled for August 15, and the show, to include more than 1000 panels of the Map, will be up until January, 2020. See </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">art.org for details.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Two weeks later a show of similar size will open at the York College Galleries in York, Pennsylvania. It will be listed soon at yorkcollegegalleries.com.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">C'mon down and say, "Hi!"</span>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-31394906974414796892019-05-20T13:27:00.000-07:002019-05-20T13:27:15.908-07:00Hey! <br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> If you make art and would like to trade an original piece of your work for an original panel of Jerry's Map please email me! I have always encouraged guest artist to contribute to my project, and now I am offering my work for yours. The only requirements are that your piece be two-dimensional and roughly 8 by 10 inches. By trading you will also authorize me to reproduce your work as a panel of Jerry's Map. Sound good? Thanks!</span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZOp8XZytK4KMxtQKVrclln5o7_s4HNDAgJ2w5UbGgEatvcxNVq68wjuYq5IJm1baQ7946L3E4O3XJ0PfKSGa8DiGCTNGAz6vj4oetyMvyJCuXZvRgf2jZzWjXxnextEM_VsJOlbKtlZA/s1600/Ex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZOp8XZytK4KMxtQKVrclln5o7_s4HNDAgJ2w5UbGgEatvcxNVq68wjuYq5IJm1baQ7946L3E4O3XJ0PfKSGa8DiGCTNGAz6vj4oetyMvyJCuXZvRgf2jZzWjXxnextEM_VsJOlbKtlZA/s320/Ex.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are two shows opening at the end of the summer: the first is at Intuit in Chicago opening about August 22, and the second will be at York College of Pennsylvania and will open August 29. Both shows will feature a wide East-West swath of the Map comprising about 500 panels.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Map book continues to make progress, but there is no publication date set yet. Funding is in place to take the project up to publication. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A time-lapse video of the Map showing its growth and change over the last twenty years is in preliminary planning. Once a budget is established we will seek funding.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the meantime you can help by buying Map prints, instruction cards, and postcards on Etsy. Take a look! Thanks!</span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Reminder: I am giving a gallery talk at the Grand Rapids Art Museum at 6PM on Thursday, April 11. If you are anywhere nearby I hope that you will come and introduce yourself!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the meantime take another look at the Jerry's Map listings in Etsy. There will be new postings today. All proceeds go back directly into the production of the Map. We appreciate your support!</span>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-36369157955095502642019-03-17T05:33:00.002-07:002019-03-17T05:33:58.735-07:00Progress report<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMZrkam_YFT0NLQQxzU1Gh5rhv7_ZqyuOCaIeE3ttvU2kZGMVJEg5ljlVXzXOsGQ-K8eQ1D-9Ob7__JirOUqQrE0rmUo6NKoKCDKMze_w_tcyFQuypAr55szfEUkaGxKCm1ydc-fJXSRg/s1600/n10e8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMZrkam_YFT0NLQQxzU1Gh5rhv7_ZqyuOCaIeE3ttvU2kZGMVJEg5ljlVXzXOsGQ-K8eQ1D-9Ob7__JirOUqQrE0rmUo6NKoKCDKMze_w_tcyFQuypAr55szfEUkaGxKCm1ydc-fJXSRg/s320/n10e8.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The "pixelization" of the Map is making progress and is, by my estimate, about 15% done. It should be complete in another, say, ten years. By then, though, I will have gotten bored with the process and gone on to something else.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been changing the instructions on many cards, getting rid of the "Copy" instruction which creates new generations and substituting "Scan" demands. That will allow panels to accumulate more fresh work before they are retired. And, by scanning more, we will be making more images available for the planned time-lapse video of the growth of the Map.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I estimate that we now have about 30,000 scans on file. If each one was to be a frame in a video and if they were projected at 30 frames a second the video would be almost 17 minutes long. I am aiming to do 20 minutes. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now we need to come up with a budget for such a project and then find someone to execute it. Ideas?</span>Jerry Gretzingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029594913270093086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153489848796289746.post-51958715118647081812019-03-12T04:56:00.000-07:002019-03-12T04:56:08.238-07:00Some questions<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbk2uvI523WO-n8YdZ7z9EwlMd3Dhh-6m6geXo-hJ9zBaaNjCmAxhQNXRuzxDnz3yXh7YCBX232d7ZFO_Dtd1HhCrsJ9RqNMW2JxzHGZn2NhYo5rGtIboxU5Rx_wcvou-yJ6OiVR2K1zk/s1600/n14w14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbk2uvI523WO-n8YdZ7z9EwlMd3Dhh-6m6geXo-hJ9zBaaNjCmAxhQNXRuzxDnz3yXh7YCBX232d7ZFO_Dtd1HhCrsJ9RqNMW2JxzHGZn2NhYo5rGtIboxU5Rx_wcvou-yJ6OiVR2K1zk/s320/n14w14.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you been to Etsy lately and seen the Jerry's Map offerings? There are postcards at $2, instruction cards at $17, and Map prints at $23. Remember: all the proceeds go back directly into the production of the Map. And maybe some day we will have enough to produce an animation of the growth of the Map!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What museums (or other public institutions like libraries or schools) would like to receive a free 20-panel chunk of Jerry's Map? Retired original panels need a few good homes. We put the names of potential recipients in a hat and draw them at random.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Who'd like to hear a talk by the artist? I will be at the Grand Rapids Art Museum on April 11 to talk about my project and the process used to produce it. Check their website for details:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://artmuseumgr.org/">artmuseumgr.org</a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
